How It Works
- From the Lobby, select "Learner Mode".
- A game starts against the AI coach. Play your moves normally.
- After each move, the coach provides instant feedback: ⭐ Excellent, ✅ Best, 👍 Good, or ➡️ Continue.
- The evaluation bar shows who's winning and by how much (in centipawns).
- If you play a suboptimal move, the coach highlights the best alternative and explains why.
Benefits of Learner Mode

See the position evaluation change after every move with a dynamic eval bar.
Blunder Detection
Instantly know when you've made a mistake, with the engine's recommended line shown.

Tournament System
DM Chess features a full-fledged knockout tournament system with official bracket progressions, live scheduling, automatic pairings, and certified Arbiter supervision. Tournaments support 4, 8, 16, 32, or 64 players.
Tournament Structure
🏆 Knockout Format
All tournaments follow a single-elimination knockout format:
- Round of 8 → Quarterfinals → Semifinals → Championship Final
- Each round, the loser is eliminated and the winner advances to the next bracket.
- The final match winner is crowned Tournament Champion.
- All matches have scheduled times with automatic countdowns and notifications.
How to Participate
- From the Lobby, select "Tournament Arena".
- Register as a Chess Tournament Enthusiast by clicking the registration button.
- Wait for the Arbiter to nominate you for an upcoming tournament.
- If nominated, you'll receive an invitation — accept or decline within the deadline.
- Once all players confirm, the Admin approves and the bracket launches.
- Play your matches at the scheduled times. Winners advance automatically.
Tournament Lifecycle
Arbiter & Tournament Proposals
The Arbiter is the official tournament director who organizes and oversees the competition. Any registered member can become an Arbiter, subject to eligibility rules.
How to Organize a Tournament
- Go to the Tournament Arena and click "Play the Role of Arbiter".
- Authenticate with your Arbiter credentials (email verification).
- Fill out the Tournament Proposal Form: tournament name, time control, and nominate players.
- Select exactly the required number of players from registered enthusiasts.
- Submit your proposal. All nominated players receive invitations.
- Once all players accept, the proposal is sent to the Super Admin for final approval.
- After admin acceptance, the bracket is created and matches are scheduled.
Eligibility Rules
"Any member, except the Arbiter and who participates in the tournament organized by the Arbiter, may organize another tournament as an Arbiter. However, the same rules and regulations shall apply as in the previous tournament."
In practice, this means:
- The current Arbiter cannot organize another tournament until their active tournament concludes.
- Active contenders (players competing in the tournament) cannot organize a new tournament while competing.
- Any other registered member is free to organize a tournament as Arbiter.
- If you are neither a participant nor the Arbiter, no tournament data is stored in your account.
Director Live Hub
The Director Live Hub is a real-time monitoring dashboard that tracks all active and completed games. It provides live move updates, match statistics, and game history.
Who Can Access
- Super Admin — Full access to all game data and monitoring tools.
- Arbiter — Can observe real-time games of their tournament only.
- Tournament Players — Cannot access the Director Hub during their tournament (to prevent unfair advantage).
- Regular Members — Can view their own completed game history.

Move Quality System
Every move you play is automatically evaluated and classified into one of four quality categories. The % Excellent badge in the Move History header shows your ratio of excellent moves across all moves in the game.
⭐ Quality Categories
| Rating | What It Means | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| ⭐ Excellent | Outstanding moves — game-changing plays | Checkmate, castling, queen promotion, premier openings (e4, d4, c4, Nf3) |
| ✅ Best | Strong moves — tactically sound | Checks, en passant, minor piece promotions, strong captures |
| 👍 Good | Solid moves — maintain position | Central pawn pushes, piece development, captures of equal value |
| ➡️ Continue | Playable moves — no major impact | Quiet moves, shuffling, non-critical pawn pushes |
Formula: Excellent Moves % = (Number of Excellent Moves ÷ Total Moves) × 100

Frequently Asked Questions
❓ Do I need to download anything?
No! DM Chess runs entirely in your browser. Just visit dm-chess.com and start playing.
❓ Is DM Chess really free?
Yes — 100% free with no ads, no subscriptions, and no premium tiers. Every feature is available to all users.
❓ Can I play without creating an account?
Yes! Use the "Continue as Guest" option. Guests can play vs Computer and use Learner Mode. However, online rated games and tournaments require a registered account.
❓ How do I become a Tournament Arbiter?
Any registered member who is not currently an Arbiter or a contender in an active tournament may organize a new tournament as Arbiter. Go to Tournament Arena → "Play the Role of Arbiter".
❓ What happens if I disconnect during a game?
Your clock keeps running. DM Chess uses server-authoritative timekeeping, so reconnecting resumes your game from the exact position. If your time runs out while disconnected, you lose.
❓ How is the Excellent Moves percentage calculated?
It's the number of moves rated "Excellent" divided by the total number of moves in the game, multiplied by 100. Both your and your opponent's moves are counted.
❓ Can I use Learner Mode during a tournament?
Learner Mode is a separate practice tool and does not affect tournament games. You can practice in Learner Mode between tournament matches to prepare.
